In the transmission systems of the machinery industry, universal shafts (also known as universal joint transmission shafts or universal couplings) are components used to connect two misaligned shafts. They transmit torque while allowing a certain angular deviation. When standard-size universal shafts fail to meet the spatial layout, load requirements or connection modes of special equipment, customized manufacturing by professional manufacturers becomes necessary. For retrofitting projects without existing drawings, the factory conducts on-site surveying and mapping to guarantee assembly precision. High-quality alloy steels such as 40Cr, 42CrMo and 20CrMnTi are adopted for major load-bearing parts of universal shafts, with quenching and tempering or carburizing & quenching heat treatment performed according to working conditions. Custom manufacturers select appropriate material grades and heat treatment standards based on load types and fatigue life requirements. Blanks are produced by forging or casting. Forged blanks feature dense internal microstructure and high load capacity, making them the primary choice for heavy-duty universal shafts. After rough machining, blanks undergo heat treatment to achieve required hardness and toughness.

CNC lathes, milling machines and machining centers carry out semi-finishing and finish machining of all parts. Dimensional tolerances of critical mating surfaces (cross shaft journals, bearing holes, spline teeth, etc.) are controlled at the micron level. Post-machining processes include component cleaning and deburring prior to assembly. During assembly, clearance adjustment between cross shafts and bearings is a key factor governing transmission efficiency and service life. Excessive clearance causes impact loads, while insufficient clearance leads to overheating and seizure. Custom manufacturers control preload force in accordance with standardized processes, and apply grease or install grease nipples to facilitate routine maintenance.
